Porqué soy feliz con el Nook de Barnes and Noble

El Nook es un ebook reader vendido por Barnes and Noble. Este reader al igual que el Amazon Kindle usa la tecnología e-paper la cual está diseñada para imitar la apariencia de la tinta en papel normal. Hoy en día muchas personas dicen que no vale la pena un dispositivo e-paper pues no tiene colores, el display es lento y no hace más nada. Dispositivos como el iPad están llamando la atención porque además de leer libros, puedo ver videos, browsear internet, etc.

Características

Primeramente, las características de la versión del Nook que tengo son las siguientes:

Wi-Fi
Pantalla LCD full color touch screen de 3.5"
Pesa 11.6 onzas
Pantalla de 6" a 256 tonalidades de grises
2GB de memoria interna
Puerto MicroSD para expansión (le tengo una memoria de 1GB).
Toca MP3 mediante las bocinas que trae o puedo conectar un audífono
Conector USB para copiarle libros desde la computadora (sirve para cargar la batería por el USB también)
Batería: se carga full en unas 3.5 horas, y la batería dura unos 10 días
Formatos soportados: EPUB, PDF, PDB, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP

Porqué un Nook y no un Kindle?

El Kindle es el ebook reader que casi todo el mundo menciona cuando se habla de un ebook reader, y es lógico porque fue el primer device que hizo un boom (aunque el Sony Reader le lleva unos añitos). A principio de año Amazon.com lanzó una versión internacional del Kindle, lo cual hacía posible comprar el aparato fuera de los Estados Unidos, y aunque casi todo lo compro online a través de amazon.com no me gustaba su reader por:

Era solo 3G, aunque Amazon anunció ayer una versión Wi-Fi only del device a $139 para vender a partir de Agosto, pero hace un mes, eso no existía.
Por el hecho de ser 3G no podía navegar internet con el dispositivo. Solamente podría entrar a la tienda de amazon.com para comprar libros.
El formato propietario. Para mí fue el problema mayor. El Kindle usa un formato propietario para sus libros y no lee EPUB. El EPUB pudieramos considerarlo el “MP3 de los ebooks”, aunque hay un montón de formatos de audio, muchos técnicamente mejores que el MP3, éste sigue siendo el rey. Creo que si los ebooks se van a masificar de la manera que uno espera, el EPUB será el formato que domine.

Mi experiencia

Me gusta mucho la lecturam desde hace como 8 años he estado escuchando los libros en audio en vez de leerlo ya que me permite descansar la vista, puedo escucharlos mientras estoy manejando y es más cómodo no tener que cargar un libro pesado. Leo muchas novelas, pero leo muchos libros técnicos, también leo muchos blogs y una que otra vez leo un tema en wikipedia.

El Nook me permite leer cualquier libro en formato EPUB que no tenga DRM. Con DRM puedo leer libros de la tienda de Barnes and Noble, y tengo entendido que es posible leer cualquier EPUB que esté protegido con Adobe Digital Editions que es el DRM que puede leer el Nook. Esto último no lo he probado pero he encontrado unos cuantos posts en internet de cómo comprar en tienda de Sony para leerlo en el Nook.

También me permite navegar internet. Aunque la interface no es nada del otro mundo es muy bueno.

The band, making its first comeback appearance in the United Kingdom, came on stage at 10:45 p.m., more than an hour after it was scheduled to. An angry crowd, fed up with the wait, booed Rose and company as they took the stage.

The delay tested more than fans’ patience. Because of its late start, it wrapped up late – 1 a.m. – after London’s public transportation system shut down, leaving many fans who stuck it out until the end of the set at the Hammersmith Apollo stranded without means to return home. Many others walked out before the end of the gig, simply in order to catch their trains.

Cultural Issue…

Well, as you know (or may not know) I live in the Dominican Republic (have lived here all my life, and probably will be here for the rest of it).
Life in the Dominican Republic is somewhat different from life in the United States.
Being a Dominican geek is very, very VERY hard.  Why?  No geek culture here, it’s difficult to find someone that shares your geeky interests.

For example, take me and my husband, geeks by nature, our hobbies include playing World of Warcraft and... well…uhm… also playing World of Warcraft :).  World of Warcraft is my newest passion but haven’t found a single Dominican playing the game (not everyone is as big a geek to pay US$15 a month to play the MMORPG).
Well, our hobbies include other geeky activities such as watching science fiction and fantasy tv shows and movies, reading sci-fi and fantasy books, software development :), playing video games and mess around with new technologies, but of course, our recent encounter with World of Warcraft has moved all those other hobbies to a “less interesting” place.

I can’t talk to anyone else in this country about Battlestar Gallactica or Serenity, because no one I know even knows what it is.  Don’t get me wrong,   I’m pretty sure there are plenty of Dominican geeks just like us out there but we are such an extinct species that we are very hard to track.  In World of Warcraft my husband and I joined a Guild.  A Guild in World of Warcraft is basically a group of players that get together, form a group and chat and play together when online at the game.  Our Guild is called Old School, we’re just a bunch of “normal geeks” who have a real life outside the game (work, school, kids, spouses, etc), our ages ranging between 18 and 46.  I really enjoyed last night talking to them remembering things we did in the days of our kid and teen years such as watching MTV when it played videos, Saturday morning cartoons, watching E.T. the first time it was shown in theaters, Nick at Nite, and a bunch of other things that I’m pretty sure most American people from my generation have experienced, but not really sure about the number of domincans that have lived it.

I really love seeing the amount of Dominicans blogs on the web, it makes you feel you’re not alone in a “American populated internet”.  Most of blogs maintained by Dominicans either living here or on another country can be found at http://www.dominicanblogger.com.

Well, look at the time, time to get back to coding.  I’m trying out the Blogger Addin for Microsoft Word for this post.  I just hate writing inside the Blogger HTML thing.  Let’s see how it shows.

Habemus Papam!!!!

El martes eligieron un nuevo papa. Soy catolica, creo en Dios, pero lamentablemente (para algunos) mi creencia en lo que es la iglesia y su estructura, no es muy buena. Para mi la iglesia, es simplemente otro organismo politico. Claro que me plante delante de la television para ver el nuevo Papa, pues ya que el unico Papa que habia visto desde que tengo uso de razon era Juan Pablo II, pense que seria un "once in a lifetime opportunity". Si siguen eligiendo Papas tan "maduros" creo que esta se convertira en "a few times in a lifetime opportunity" :D

Hace un tiempo habia oido un par de episodios del Podcast de Father Roderick Vonhögen, Catholic Insider. Es interesante ver un padre tan cerca de la tecnologia. La calidad del audio es excelente. Cuando vi que eligieron un nuevo papa lo primero que pense es que el proximo podcast del Father Roderick iba a ser interesante, ya que el cubrio la muerte y entiero del papa Juan Pablo II desde el Vaticano. Efectivamente hay dos episodios del dia 19, donde se escucha la gente en la plaza San Pedro emocionada cuando vieron salir el humo, y cantando Habemus Papam!. Escribo esto mientras escucho el segundo episodio del dia 19, y a la verdad que es muy interesante, vale la pena escucharlo, y la calidad del sonido es excelente.

Do you hear me now? Good!

Tengo varios dias sin escribir, pero es que este blogger esta cada dia peor. Es extrana la "coincidencia" de que blogger.com este tan "maloso" luego del lanzamiento oficial de msn.spaces. Sabotaje anyone? :DBueno, en estos dias he estado madurando una idea que tengo. Proximamente vendra algo... el que?... algo... don't worry, todo a su debido momento.

Si Blogger sigue en estos canes, tendremos que mudarnos para otro lado. Me gusta de MSN Spaces el asunto con las fotos, la integracion con el messenger (por ahi es que agarran a uno, integrando una cosa nueva con algo que uno usa a diario). Pero no termina de gustarme. No se si es porque la mayoria de los spaces se ven como tan ... no se... basura :D. Es el look and feel que le dio Microsoft, muy MSN (duh!) pero a mi personalmente no termina de cuadrarme.

En otra nota, Adobe compro a Macromedia, por unos cuantos "billoncitos". A ver que resulta de esta union. La competencia entre los dos era muy buena (quizas de ahi salieron tan buenos productos). Pero ahora sin competencia, que pasara con nosotros los usuarios? Seguiran evolucionando el Freehand o el Illustrator? El Photoshop vendra ahora con una version de Fireworks o seguira con ImageReady? Descontinuaran algunos productos o lo uniran? Bueno, solo el tiempo nos dira esto. Solo espero que esta compra no termine como HP/Compaq, que todavia muchos consumidores estan confundidos.

Information Overload

Últimamente he estado sufriendo de sobrecarga de información.

Espero que pronto se inventen los libros en pastillas (que te bebas una pastilla de un libro y se quede en tu mente como que lo leiste) J porque ya el tiempo no está dando para asimilar la cantidad de información que nos está llegando.

Hace un par de años, empecé a comprar los libros en formato de audio, para poder oír los libros mientras descansaba, así aprovechaba a descansar mi vista, ya que me paso el día entero delante de una pantalla (ya sea la computadora, o el televisor). Para mí esto fue “la chulería en pote”, porque me podía acostar en mi cama a mirar el techo o cerrar los ojos, y escuchar bestsellers como The DaVinci Code. Me acostumbré a esto y hace mucho tiempo que no compro un libro (a menos que sea un libro técnico de programación) en formato convencional.

Después encontré los podcasts, y comenzé a grabarlos en mi Pocket PC también, pues me compré un Compact Flash de 1GB para poder tener los podcasts y los libros. Pero no era suficiente, era muy incómodo el bajar audio, escucharlo y borrarlo para hacer espacio para otros, fue entonces cuando decidí comprarme un iPod.

Compré el iPod de 20GB porque pensé que 40GB era demasiado para mí, ya que mi colección de música no ocupaba más de 6GB. Todavía estoy de acuerdo de que esos 20GB son suficientes para mí, pero mi iPod esta casi llenándose. De qué? de podcasts. Lo más raro es que el 85% de las veces que prendo el iPod es para oir o un podcast o un libro. Siempre escucho podcasts y libros mientras voy en el carro para el trabajo o mientras estoy trabajando. Es muy raro que escuche música de los casi 10GB que tengo.

Como si todo esto fuera poco, antes entraba a dos o tres websites unas cuantas veces a la semana, para mantenerme actualizada, ya que la naturaleza de mi trabajo (desarrolladora de software) me exige mantenerme al tanto de las últimas tendencias de la tecnología. Hoy en día, entre websites que necesito leer para no convertirme en un fósil informático, y sites que leo porque tratan de temas que me gustan, y sites nuevos que encuentro, es increíble el tiempo que me toma dar “un recorrido” por el web, antes en 20 o 25 minutos tenía, ahora, fácilmente en 2 horas no he terminado. Y si me pongo a leer blogs, ahí es que me pierden!! J

Esto es el web, pero hace unos meses mi esposo y yo decidimos comprar un Tivo, para no perdernos las series que veíamos. Luego que nos acostumbramos al aparato, ponemos a grabar todo lo que nos interesa, hasta lo que no hay tiempo de ver (y que despues hay que hacer tiempo para ver).

Dada mi constante necesidad de estar conectada, recientemente compré un Pocket PC nuevo, que me ofrece mejor resolución para ver videos, porque muchos de los sites que navego de programación (específicamente los de Microsoft) ofrecen ciertos shows “bajables” en formato Windows Media Video (WMV) que los grabo en el Pocket PC para verlos mientras estoy acostada en mi cama antes de dormir, o mientras estoy metida dentro de un secador de pelo en el salón.

Ya no hay tiempo para nada. Entre todo esto y el tránsito en nuestro país que ir de aquí a allí toma 30 minutos, los días son mas cortos, las 24 horas del día no son suficiente para todas las actividades que conlleva el vivir en el siglo 21.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- One person is dead and three are gravely ill after a tequila-drinking competition in Santo Domingo.
The winner of the contest died. Ricardo Ivan Garcia drank more than 50 shots of tequila Sunday night at Santo Domingo's Blanc, Dance and Lounge discotheque to win the prize of $330 -- 10,000 pesos -- at a Mexican night celebration.
A prosecutor said the man died of apparent heart failure brought on by alcohol poisoning. Three other contestants remain in serious condition in a hospital.

La noticia llama bastante la atencion desde el "lado de los gringos" donde se ve que esa gente perdieron la vida por $330 dolares, que no dan ni para comprar un iPod 40GB.

El día internacional de la mujer.

Anja.. y entonce?
Yo no conozco un día internacional del hombre. Entonces, las mujeres haciendo desde hace tantos años tanto lío, que quemando ropa interior y no se que ocho cuartos, todo para la “igualdad” pero tienen un día “internacional de la mujer”. Donde esta la “igualdad”?

Definición de mujer:
Mujer: pájaro complicado, cherchoso y que no sabe manejar :D

Bueno, la mayoría no sabe manejar, y las que saben un chin, se ponen a maquillarse MANEJANDO en la calle. Claro que no es que los hombres manejen muy bien, porque mientras la mujer esta maquillandose con el guia en una mano, un pintalabios en la otra y mirandose la boca en el espejito, el hombre esta haciendo “corte de pastelitos” porque “se me va a poner alante” o “me van cruzar” o “este no se va a meter aquí no”.

Pero “enibueis” dejemos el asunto de la cultura del manejo para otro dia. Vamos a lo que vinimos.

El dia internacional de la mujer.
La Carta de las Naciones Unidas, firmada en San Francisco en 1945, fue el primer acuerdo internacional que proclamó que la igualdad de los sexos era un derecho humano fundamental.

La Organización de Naciones Unidas, en el año 1975, estableció el 8 de marzo como el Día Internacional de la Mujer, en honor a los sucesos acaecidos el 8 de marzo de 1857, y de los que surgen dos versiones. La primera de ellas gira en torno a un trágico episodio desarrollado en la ciudad de Nueva York y que terminara con la vida de 129 trabajadoras textiles.

De acuerdo a esta versión, durante el transcurso de una huelga convocada como respuesta al despido masivo aplicado por la patronal frente a las denuncias relacionadas con las deplorables condiciones de trabajo, las trabajadoras decidieron encerrarse en el establecimiento fabril. "Súbitamente" se produjo un voraz incendio que terminó con la vida de aquellas mujeres que sólo reclamaban por sus derechos. Al sepelio asistieron más de 100.000 personas.

La segunda versión, ligada a investigaciones como las de la historiadora canadiense Renée Côté, el 8 de marzo se vincula con la realización de una movilización de protesta organizada por el gremio de costureras de la compañía textil de Lower East Side, de Nueva York, en la que se bregaba por una jornada laboral de ¡10! horas.

Entonces, ahí esta, el origen de este asunto. Nada, traje un chin de “cultura con sabrosura” para variar :D

Pero nada, muchas felicidades a todas las mujeres por ahí, y que este dia nos traiga mucho dinero (ok, ese no es el proposito y no se regala dinero hoy, pero seria chulo recibir mucho dinero verdad?)

Minish Cap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got a new game for the GBA, The Legend of Zelda:The Minish Cap.
I started to play right away and all I have to say is that it's a GREAT game.
Beautifull graphics, somewhat the same story : "save princess Zelda and the town oh Hyrule" but it has a nice touch. You have the ability to turn into a small link (hence the Minish on the title).

Let's see, so I started playing the game today (feb 05). Let's see how much time it'll take me to finish it. I'm thinking maybe 2 or 3 months :(.

Today has been a GREAT day...
... well so far at least..
First thin in the morning I was contacted via MSN Messenber by a friend I've been trying to contact for a couple of years, and seems like she was trying to contact me too. She took a wild guess at my email address and found me. We talked a lot, I'm so glad.

Then in the afternoon I came across a post in a forum for a Dragonlance Trailers page. A few guys had the dream (like most of us Dragonlance fans) to see a Dragonlance Movie, and they went ahead and did it. Of course that they didn't have the resources to make the whole movie, and did some trailers instead.

Life after tivo.
Get a Tivo, I can't go back to life without Tivo.El tivo funciona. El de 40 horas es muy pequeño, get a bigger one. Uno cree que porque "Lo voy a usar como un VHS nada mas" le va a rendir. Es mentira, no sera suficiente.

Tivo will cost you US$12 a month, but it's worth it.You can schedule regular shows as season passes, or you could schedule wishlists (grabame todo lo que den con Tom Cruise), or better yet, you can schedule recordings from the web (cool if you're gonna stay late at the office but don't want to miss a movie that will be on later).

I'ts true you can do the same with a PC and software like Snapstream or a Media Center PC, but those won't cost $200 like the 40Hrs tivo will, or $300 the 40hrs one.

Tivo won't work with telecable, you're gonna need Dish or DirectTV.

Que susto!!!!

Ayer pense que mi iPod habia muerto.
Estaba oyendo musica en el camino a la casa, y tuve que detenerme a comprar algo, so puse el iPod en pausa y lo apague. Luego 10 minutos mas tarde, cuando intento prenderlo NO HACE NADA!!.
Pense que la bateria se habia acabado. Cuando llegue a la casa, la conecto a la electricidad y todavia no prende!!! Comienzo a puncharla y nadita de nada... Busco en el site de support de Apple y dice que presione Menu + Select por 10 segundos. Lo hice y nada de nada. Ya tenia los ojos aguados, estaba buscando en Apple.com el procedimiento para devolverla. En una dije 'dejame intentar de nuevo' y REVIVIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Aparentemente yo le estaba dando mal a los botones.

Bueno, porque se apago? Quien sabe!! I hope que haya sido la bateria que se haya acabado porque ayer la use bastante. (Si, LA, es hembra, mi iPod es hembra, como todos mis aparatos electronicos que son hembra).

Ojala y no me de otro susto asi, porque no puedo estar en esto!!!!

Microsoft Message Queue Trigger with VB.NET

Last week, including the weekend and today, I’ve been working with (or as I prefer, TRYING to work with) Message Queues and .NET.
The scenario is this. I have different web applications and needed a way for them to communicate with each other “backstage”, so I thought about Microsoft Message Queues.
I didn’t want to write a service to monitor the queue, because that’s something that’s provided by the MSMQ service itself so it makes no sense to replicate such functionality. After much trial and error and hitting the computer desk, and complaining about the lack of information about this on the Internet, I finally made my triggers work. Here is a small tutorial for anyone that wants to do this (and also for when I forget how the heck I did it).

Create the .NET Assembly
Create a COM Class
Sign the assembly with a strong key
Register the assembly in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC)
Register the trigger rule
Register the Trigger
Test the thing!!!!

The first step was to create a .NET assembly. This assembly needs three special things.
It needs to have a COM CLASS
It needs to have ‘Register for COM Interop” checked in the Configuration Build dialog.
It needs to have a strong name (signed with a key)

So, create a new Class Library project, add a COM Class and code your class.
Create a key with the sn.exe utility (from the Visual Studio Command Prompt) with the –k option to generate a new key and specify the key name. After doing this, place the .snk file in the project folder, and add the following to the AssemblyInfo.vb in your Class Library.

<Assembly: AssemblyDelaySign(False)>
<Assembly: AssemblyKeyName("")>
<Assembly: AssemblyKeyFile("..\..\\yourkeyfilename.snk")>

Compile your class, and use the following to register in the Global Assembly Cache:
regasm dllname.dll
gacutil /if dllname.dll

To unregister this class from the GAC (If you need to), use the following syntax::
regasm -u dllname.dll
gacutil -uf dllname

After doing this, your class library is visible to COM clients (you can test this by calling your component from traditional ASP or VB 6).

When you create the MSMQ Trigger, keep in mind that in Windows 2000 the only action for a message is Peeking, so you’ll have to delete the message from the queue manually in your code. In Windows 2003 and XP you can specify a “Retrieval’ action, so the trigger automatically deletes the message.

Register the class and method name in the trigger definition dialog and test!!

Review of Creative's new Zen Portable Media Center - Engadget - www.engadget.com

The portable media centers are out!
This is a great review of the Creative Zen. I think these devices are great, I would really like yo buy one, but let's get serious here, I'm really thinking about paying $500 for a device that ONLY plays music/videos and photos.

I say ONLY, because with the same amount of money I could get a high-end Pocket PC and play video/audio/pictures with it. Of course, I wouldn't get the 20GB storage, but I could do fine with 1GB Compact Flash (just around $100 now) for basic stuff.

I've recently begun to appreciate the joys of RSS Feeds.
I was sitting at work last week, and started up SharpReader RSS, the only reason I had it on my PC was because I was writing some RSS feeds for the newspaper portal I work for.
I was kind of bored (yeah, I know, I was at work, I was supposed to be *working*.

So anyway, I started browsing the internet and adding every rss feed I saw to SharpReader.
The next day, I was bored again :) so I clicked on SharpReader, and started to read some headlines. The headlines lead to reading the text, and before I knew it, I was reading every programmer's blog I saw.

The thing is that reading those blogs, made me want to start writing my own!
I had created this blog almost a month ago, but never sat down to write something in (at, on) it!

OH, I forgot, If you see some misspelling or something strange in my writing, you really can't blame me, since english is my second language. I'm from the Dominican Republic, the country of el merengue, el sancocho y el mangú (more info on those later).
